Had enough of elbowing your way through December’s inevitable weekend high street hell? Lucky you – this year, all your festive needs will be catered for, along with a great day out, as London Road Open Market hosts a delightful, artistic, entertaining and affordable Christmas fayre, with mulled wine, music and gorgeous gifts …galore. Sounds too good to be true? Read on.
Christmas is upon us, and with it its unwelcome but unavoidable ugly sister, seasonal shopping. Just like your least favourite relatives, there’s no avoiding it. So what are your options? Most right-minded folk quite rightly despise the corporate hurley-burley as a tsunami of extras from ’28 Days Later’ descend, glassy-eyed yet desperate, upon Churchill Square, or the horror of that last-minute dash to Argos for some lame, hastily chosen gift (invariably given along with the receipt to facilitate easy returns). What’s left? A cardie from M&S? Novelty socks?? Lord save us.
If only there was an alternative – somewhere friendly, accessible, with a relaxed atmosphere and jam-packed with great value, top quality crafts and beautiful, unique and inspiring gifts hand-made by supremely talented local craftspeople and artisans. No hard-sell, no gimmicks, just great gifts, great prices and great entertainment in a welcoming, jovial setting. And more choice than you could ever wish for. All amid a relaxed atmosphere with music, art installations, an open-mic, mulled wine and seasonal fun. If only… Well fear not! Your prayers have been answered.
Many of you will remember the superbly received open market, film, art and entertainment fest that arts collective CompARTment put on as part of the citywide White Nights festival in October.
For those who attended, it was quite a highlight. And for those of you who missed it, worry not – it’s back: bigger, better, and just in time for all your Christmas shopping needs, large and small.
On Staurday 18 December, from 10am to 6pm, we will be taking over a whole section of London Rd Open Market. Gifts, art, bonhomie, festive cheer and no squabbling over that last vase in Habitat or that sad, last-ditch option of some mediocre CD from HMV or – heaven forbid – some cookbook by a celebrity chef. Your friends and family can avoid such a woeful fate. Wonderful, surprising gifts and a great day out to boot. Leave the mindless, heaving hordes to the high street – get yourself down to London Rd Market for all your Christmas shopping needs, combined with all the makings of a wonderful day out.
